9th Planet videos teach social and adaptive skills to young adults on the autism spectrum using both entertainment and direct instruction. The series of short videos create the story of a fictional character - Tad Shy - from another planet who is learning to take care of himself, find a job, and develop relationships on a planet where continual social interaction is the norm.
The videos use science fiction features and strong visual images to draw in the viewer and invite repeat viewing. Video behavior modeling has been cited as an effective strategy for teaching social skills to those on the autism spectrum.
